Radical thinking from the Finns...

Finland's government is drawing up plans to give every one of its citizens a basic income of 800 euros (£576) a month and scrap benefits altogether.

A poll commissioned by the agency planning the proposal, the Finnish Social Insurance Institute, showed 69% supported the basic income plan.

Prime Minister Juha Sipila was quote by QZ as backing the idea.

“For me, a basic income means simplifying the social security system,” she said.

The proposal would entitle each Finn to 800 euros tax free each month, which according to Bloomberg, would cost the government 52.2 billion euros a year.

The country's government will make a final decision on the plan in November 2016.

The Netherlands has already been trialling a similar proposal, with Utrecht set to undergo a pilot project next year.
________

AT least it gives the asylum business a new country to aim their produce at!

That aside- ive always said that if you took out all the people who are involved in taking tax and redistibruiting it ( including this tex credit omnishambles) and scrapped benefits it would be more efficient so this might well work

Given they are the highest educated nations who dont go to school until they are 7, are on of the healthiest, albeit with one of the highest suicide rates, and highest standards of healthcare ion the world they are doing something right!

It's hard to imagine those that do piss there 800 up the wall on booze being left to die in the streets with a "Well, you've had your share, so tough!"

I'm not going to pretend to understand deep economics, so I'm out.

It's an interesting concept and one that will definitely become a feature of society in the future as we become more efficient at servicing our basic needs.

I honestly don't see why it should be so unpalatable. Reduces the need for vast amounts of public sector DEL spend too.

Won't help disabled and sick people. They should be the priority in any welfare system.

Finland has a total population of circa 5.5 million. Way less people than London alone. And 89% are indigenous Finnish, born and bred.

Good luck to them.

But it won't work here.

The Moomintrolls are Finns, therefore I'm in.

There was no means testing in Moomin Valley anyway.

I call for 13BR to be banned from this platform and to be strongly censured for violating our safe space. His views will not be tolerated.

Isn't this idea just communism in a fancy hat?

The Finns, as a nation, are barking mad but are brilliant at hiding it behind a mask of Scandanavian respectability.

Any nation that has 'driving insanely fast on mud' as its national sport is OK by me.

Re: Radical thinking from the Finns...
Apart from me getting £800 pm for nothing it is a flawed plan and neccessarily fairer than now.
Some people on benefits will need more than that depending where they live and how large a family they have whilst others will think Xmas has come early as it will be more than they currently get. It won't stop people wasting the money in the same way they do now.
Then you also have the issue of people with disabilities and or who need support or care services.

Means testing is still the fairest way and if the govmt seriously want to reduce the welfare bill then get people off their arses and into work and stop paying people to have kids and stop importing cheap foriegn labour that is subsidised by us.

As nurse said I'll prob be accused of being a facist now.

Sounds like a great idea in principal
Would it make the resentment of feeling like we are paying people's benefits disappear?

You utterly repulse me.

Please take your unacceptable meritocratic hate speech to another forum.

Re: Radical thinking from the Finns...
It's a great idea. The wastage in the system of taxing then redistributing income is massive.
For those saying 800 a month is a lot. Imagine how much the average lower family in the uk with kids is getting out the system in tax credits/child benefit/free school meals etc. So plenty of people are not contributing to the tax pot despite being "hard working families"

Re: Radical thinking from the Finns...
People get money for doing nothing as it is. The whole country won't stop working the day something like this is introduced, but it will solve a whole lot of social ills and obvious prejudices.

Once people don't have to worry about the very basics, they can then turn their thoughts to more productive stuff. There will ALWAYS be shirkers & chancers, no matter what system, but that's no reason to not try something that may well be more beneficial to the nation.

Re: Radical thinking from the Finns...
Yep thinking about it an extra £155 pw for doing nothing would be lovely.
Sign me up too.

Didn't the Greens have this in their manifesto, don't remember one person anywhere who thought this was a good idea.

Re: Radical thinking from the Finns...
So people who actually bother to go to work will get the same benefits as those that cant be arsed? Brilliant. Sign me up.

Re: Radical thinking from the Finns...
It's fucking idiotic and sums up what an idiotic place the world is becoming. Their energies and money would be better spent on getting people working.
